The Mystery of the Statue

Acadieville 's Immaculée Conception

During the 1960's many Acadian churches in the south-east of New Brunswick were renovated in response to the Vatican II Council that brought a renewal to the catholic church. Even though St. Peter's in Rome was excused from renovations, in Acadia many priests supported the violation of the churches that resulted from the effort of our ancesters. Unfortunately, the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Acadieville was no exception.

The first thing to disappear were the statues, which had to go to prevent the people from worshipping idols. Members of the Catholic church in Acadieville had a strong devotion to Mary, their patron saint. Accordingly their church was graced with a statue of the Immaculate Conception purchased by their ancestors which mesured more than six feet tall and dated from the construction of the church.

Here is the mystery:

Most of the statues from the church in Acadieville were stored in the parish barn when the church was renovated. Later, they were either taken to the local dump or given away. We know the history of each statue, except for that of the Immaculate Conception, which has disappeared without a trace. Just like that, she disappeared to a place where none will say. Since it's an idol (we we're told), it would be hard to believe she ascended to heaven. So we have to assume that she remains with us mortals on the earth. Those who have seen her, and many others, would like to see her again.

If anyone can help us with our mystery, please don't take your secret with you to the grave, or else we will suffer anew from the departure of the Immaculate Conception.
